westport, Connecticut Greek Revival
This new home was designed to fit almost exactly on the footprint of a decrepit 1950’s ranch house, which had a long open breezeway connecting it to a one-storey garage. Property and wetland setback lines precluded expanding the house outward, resulting in the choice to style the new house as a two-storey, 19th century Greek Revival typical of coastal Connecticut, with a meandering ell connecting it to a two-storey “barn”. The clients opted for a spacious, open-concept kitchen/dining/living area on the first floor of the main house. Not shown is a commodious in-law suite - also on the first floor; a large family room/home office on the second floor of the barn, and three bedrooms with additional baths on the second floor of the main house.
The Greek Revival front entry portico is a custom design inspired by Nantucket’s famous “Three Bricks”, and uses perfectly proportioned Greek Ionic style columns and pilasters supplied by a Connecticut millwork shop. Windows and French doors are by Marvin. Kitchen cabinets are Poggenpohl cabinets, which were reclaimed from a Manhattan apartment undergoing renovations. Front entry door is fiberglass. All exterior mouldings and trim boards are of Azek. Front entry door and garage doors are painted with Benjamin Moore Essex Green.
