I was asked to help renovate a floor-through apartment in this 19th century townhouse in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood by a new homeowner, whose only mandate was that I make the space more functional and provide as much storage room as possible. The apartment had been significantly altered on several previous occasions and was in very poor condition at the time of purchase, so the homeowner and I elected to undertake a full gut renovation, which led us to strip the interiors of the apartment down to the original framing and brickwork. That then permitted us to turn what had been a one-bedroom, one and a half-bath layout into a two-bedroom unit with two full baths and a separate laundry area/coat closet. In addition to filling the spaces with custom cabinetry, we also installed a Unico high-velocity HVAC system for better climate control and restored all of the existing windows so that they were fitted with energy-efficient thermopane glass.
